Lancet Psychiatry: Transforming suicide helpline services into resilient global health infrastructure
A new article published in The Lancet Psychiatry highlights the urgent need to strengthen suicide helpline services as a core component of global health infrastructure. Co-authored by Dr Alan Woodward, Policy Director at LifeLine International, alongside an international panel of suicide prevention experts, the article outlines how helplines can evolve from fragile, often underfunded services into resilient, sustainable systems capable of saving lives worldwide.
Drawing on evidence from a global survey of services across 105 countries, the authors present five strategic imperatives for action:
- Sustainable public investment
- Standardised capacity building in helpline services
- Universal access and availability
- Rights-based active rescue
- Statutory governance for artificial intelligence
The article calls on governments, health systems, and international partners to prioritise these reforms to ensure equitable access to crisis support and strengthen suicide prevention efforts globally.
