IASP supports global Decriminalise Suicide Worldwide campaign
November 2023
Today, we thank the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) for their ongoing support of our Decriminalise Suicide Worldwide campaign. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to preventing suicide, advancing the cause of decriminalisation in 25 countries, and the growth of crisis support services on a global scale.
In providing IASP’s support for the campaign, their President, Professor Rory O’Connor, emphasised the importance of decriminalising suicide as an essential aspect of global suicide prevention efforts.
“It is vital that the laws that criminalise suicide and suicidal behaviour are repealed, and that, alongside this, we tackle the stigma associated with suicide,” Professor O’Connor said.
“We need to redouble our efforts to ensure that suicidal behaviour is prioritised as a public health concern and receives the attention it deserves. Moreover, the highest standard of mental health is a human right.”
The impact of decriminalisation extends far beyond legal reform. Professor O’Connor added that it leads to greater support for those affected by suicide, including families, friends, and communities, emphasising the ripple effect of change in this critical endeavour.
At LifeLine International, we welcome IASP’s support of our Decriminalise Suicide Worldwide campaign and their encouragement for our Members, individuals, organisations, researchers, health professionals, and policymakers to unite in our effort to drive change.
Furthermore, we are grateful for their commendation of our ongoing strategic goal of expanding crisis line services in collaboration with local organisations, crisis line networks, governments, and fundraising entities. Ensuring immediate access to help during times of suicidal despair remains a vital step toward our shared mission of preventing suicide and promoting mental well-being.
LifeLine International is honoured to work hand-in-hand with IASP, and other partners, on this essential campaign. We look forward to furthering our collective hope of creating a world where suicide is no longer criminalised, and crisis support is readily available to those in need.
Together, we believe suicide can be prevented. We hope this collaboration will make a lasting impact and build a brighter future for all.
