Asido Foundation Joins LifeLine International Network to Strengthen Suicide Prevention in Nigeria
The Asido Foundation, a leading Nigerian mental health advocacy organization, is proud to join the LifeLine International Network, marking a significant step forward in its mission to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention across Nigeria.
“If you want to go fast, travel alone. But if you want to go far, go with people,” shares Asido Founder and CEO Prof. Jibril Abdulmalik, citing an African proverb that captures the spirit of this new partnership. Through membership in LifeLine International, Asido joins a global community of experienced professionals in suicide prevention, enhancing their ability to serve communities across Nigeria where the impact of suicide in remains a pressing concern, particularly among the youth population.
With nearly 50% of Nigeria’s population under 15 years of age, the foundation recognizes the urgent need to address this issue. Currently, individuals who attempt suicide face not only emotional challenges but also legal consequences, as attempted suicide remains criminalized under Nigerian law.
The Asido Foundation works tirelessly to support individuals and communities through:
- Operation of a dedicated helpline for individuals in emotional distress
- Community awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and promote understanding
- Advocacy for mental health reforms, including the decriminalization of attempted suicide
- Mental health education and support services
- Programs promoting service user empowerment
As a non-profit organization, Asido Foundation is committed to promoting mental health awareness and improving access to mental health services.
