What we do

The Suicide Research and Prevention Initiative (SURPIN) is a not-for-profit organization in Nigeria focused on suicide prevention, operating across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. SURPIN runs a 24 hour helpline. The SURPIN helpline is a key resource for individuals seeking support, offering immediate counselling and intervention services. Its multidisciplinary team of over 100 professionals, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, medical social workers, mental health nurses, family physicians, public health physicians, and pharmacists, form a national referral network that connects individuals with in-person support when needed, ensuring they receive appropriate care.

In addition to its helpline services, SURPIN actively works to raise mental health awareness and prevent suicide in Nigeria. Its efforts include training key stakeholders such as students, religious leaders, and journalists, as well as hosting digital depression clinics, interactive social media challenges, and youth engagement programs. SURPIN also organizes creative competitions to educate the public and collaborates with partners to host conferences and awareness campaigns, focusing on mental well-being and building future advocacy for youth mental health.
